after a long car ride we took a fun nice enjoyable bike ride a couple miles down the road from falling water. this trail goes all the way to D.C. about 600 miles. a lot of people do take that trail, i would think it's fun and exciting to do with some friends. we didnt go all the way to D.C. we went down 3 miles and back 3miles. it was amazing to hear the brirds and the water as i ride, that was a thing experience and i would love to do it again and next time take some one who hasn't done it to show them something new.

Ohiopyle
On 6/25/10 We went to Ohiopyle for a bike trip. We also saw a river that had rapids for whitewater rafting. There were a lot of people in the water fishing, swimming, and kayaking. We went to a shop and rented bikes. Our bike trip was 6 miles. We went 3 miles on the B&O Railroad trail. Then we went back the same 3 miles. It was fun but tiring. I would do it again. The trail we were on went from Washington D.C to Pittsburgh.
I don't remember the last time I went bike riding actually. I was actually surprised that I still knew how to ride a bike. After about five minutes I adjusted to it and I took off. I was ahead of my whole group majority of the trip. It was fun to get back on a bike. I also enjoyed the scenery I got to see while biking. Biking on the trail is completely differ net from biking in the city. On a trail there are no cars and the air is cleaner because you are away from all the polluted air that the cars pump out. You also get to experience nature better on a trail.

OhioPyle
Hey Its Niecy B. here to tell about you about the Bioneers trip to Ohiopyle. While in OhioPyle we rode bikes on a trial called The B and O Railroad Trail.
We rode for two miles along the way we seen people fishing, swimming, and canoeing in the river.
There were also people along the trail bike riding as well, they were very friendly and waved to us as they rode by it was a fun experience.
I'd love to go back sometime, next time i'll remember to bring a water bottle because it was a workout!!
Week one of Bioneers
We put in our first week of the program of the Bioneers. What a great group and a great opportunity! Last week we were able to begin to explore what is available in the Southwestern PA region as far as conservation goes. We plan on putting this information together and presenting it to other SCA groups throughout the summer as part of our summer goals. Great start!
Fallingwater Visit
On 6/25/10 We went to Fallingwater. It is a house that was built by Frank Llyod Wright back in 1934. It was designed for Edgar J. Kaufmann. The house was built over a waterfall. That is what makes it so unique. The house was magnificent. The architect used in the house was amazing. I would recommend visiting there if looking to see something spectacular. During his late years Kaufmann gave the house to his son. He was a junior. He then gave the house to the Westen Pennsylvania Conservancy. They keep the house a tour attraction now.
Falling Water!!
Hey it's Niecy B!!
Here to to tell you about the Bioneers trip to a Conservancy/Home called Falling Waters on Friday.
Falling Waters is a house built by Frank Lloyd Wright a distinguished, and successful architect. Mr. Lloyd Wright built this house for Edgar Kaufmann and his family.
Edgar K. wanted this house to be built around nature because he loved it, and he wanted everyone to be able to see and share his love for nature.
In 1960 The Kaufmann House was turned into a Muesuem for people like us, so that we can witness the beauty it there were so many great pieces of art in that home, one would say it was an Art Gallery.
I didnt expect it to be so breathtaking, it was so big and there were so many places that you can relax at i enjoyed myself and im sure that anyone who took the time to go there would enjoy themselves too.
Friday was a wonderful day i shared with my crew! It was one of those days you can never forget. Falling waters & bike riding in one day can you say fun?? Falling waters was one if the most unique, beautiful houses I've ever seen. Being able to witness the house of the Kaufmans ment alot to me for many reasons. One, you dont come across nice homes like that every day. I'm glad they turned there home into a musuem to give people like me a chance to witness it. I was really amazed by the waterfalls and all the interior design. I wish i was able to live in a house of some sort. PAUSE, i couldnt imagine what life would be like living there. Glass windows through the whole house. It was just beautiful. Everything about it was so diffrent & i loved it. Mr. Wright designed the whole building. It really looks beautiful in the winter. I think people should really go out on the tour, They'll learn alot. I know I did. The water fall was my favorite part.
We also went bike riding on a pretty neet trail that went from b&o to D.C. of course we didnt ride that far we went about two miles. It was amazing, It was along a river where there were people fishing and all types of other things on rafts/boats. I havent been on a bike in like forever i loved the experince. Thats also something you dont get to do everyday. There was a wide range of all ages of people, from children to grandparents riding the trail. I really enjoyed myself!
Friday, Friday, Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Friday was a great day, it was so beatiful outside and we was outside all day. We took a trip to Falling Water, it's a house designed to fit into nature. this house is totally green in every way. there glass windows throughout the whole house to bring in all that sun light, the house is build over a beatiful waterfall so the house uses water from the fall.the Kaufman family use that house as like a get away from the city. the family was into anything that has to do with the outdoors: they fly fished, hunted, hiked, biked, and anything else that was outdoors. Edgar Kaufman Jr. donated the house to western pennsylvania. He didnt want it to be a museum he wanted people to see it like a house, like he saw it. about 160,0000 people visit falling water every year to see the beatiful home, i would love to go back durning another season. I would recommend falling water to any body any age.

Today we visited Racoon Creek, It was very relaxing and interesting. I would encourage everyone to visit the site. It's very nice and you can see differnet types of trees, plants, and even flowers that you dont identify here everyday in Pittsburgh. If you are an out door person this is a place for you.
Even though you cant take pets theres really nice trails that you can walk on & just see the differnet things. Its a place were you can just go to clear your mind, beautiful and relaxing. There was a neet place where bats lived. In alot of other nice things. So if you can go visit you should.

Greater Pennsylvania Regional Council Of Carpenters & Racoon Creek
Today Myself and my Crew The Bioneers visited this site called The Greater Pennsylvania Regional Council of Carpenters. The Greater Pennsylvania Regional Concil Of Carpenters is a type of training program for people (male or female) who want to pursue a career in carpentry. Some of the programs they have include welding, operating engineers, insulators, cement masons, elevator constructors, and ironworkers.
They go there to learn about these jobs and also to aquire the skills, in order for them to be able to do these jobs.
A respresentative from the program took us on a tour around the building showed us all the classrooms, introduced us to some of the students there, and explained to us the different career paths they were on.

On 6/23/10 We took a trip to Racoon Creek. While there I identified ten different flowers. Among the ten flowers my favorite was the Arrowleaf Balsam. If you are looking to experience something new then that is a nice place to visit. It was different. The trip there took a lot but it was worth it.
On 6/24/10 We went to the Greater Pennsylvania Council of Carpentry. I learned there was a lot of different careers they offered. There are many different branches of carpentry. It is important to have places like that because many kids don't know what they want to do when they leave college, and that offers free education. I plan on attending there if i still am undecided about what i want to do after school
labor omnia vincit
wow to day was kinda ok we went to carpenters union. it was kinda cool to learned about different careers to make good money in and bo;y i tell you they make alot of money. they build lots of stuff like buildings, houses, bridges, steps, even dressers . i thought to my self wow this is a great jpb experince for people who like hands in type jobs if you know what i mean.
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Wood Workers Union...
Today we went to the wood workers union, and what they do there is carpentry and construction work. its a free to attend their trade school only a $25 appcation fee, the first month you start you won't get paid but the other 11 months you will get paid $16 per hour. this program is like an apprentice type thing.so what that means is the students go on the job with pro's.
They have 17 different trade schools and 17 different jobs or should i say careers. carpentry is for any who likes hands on or building things, this is for you. carpentry isn't just for men there are 240 women in the carpentry business and they love their job. so if you love working with yous hands and building things that people will use the you should look into this program.

Garden and Green buldings were very interesting today. Took a trip to The Macoskey Center at Slippery Rock University. It was very cool. Alot of solars panels and gardens. There was a very cool spring house with a garden as its roof. There was also a green bulding, inside was a
diffrent kind of toliet. This toliet was very deep and you had to put wood in it after every use. i seen alot of stuff i never knew you can do. Just to save energy. So, I really enjoyed looking around that place.
We also went to Jennings Environmental Education Center. There was alot of trails with pretty cool flowers & trees that you dont see everyday here in Pittsburgh. Jennings provides a unique combination of prairie and forest, which offers a wide array of resource and education opportunities.
Jennings Environmental Center!!!
Our first field trip of the summer program. For our first trip we went to the Jennings Evironmental Center. Jennings is this beatiful prairie, with beatiful flowers and many trails so you can walk through the prairie and see all the amazing flowers. Prairies are rear to Pennsylavania and this prairie is very very impressive. It's 12 miles north of Buter and about a half an hour from Pittsburgh, you should really check it out. The best time you should go is late July or early August. It's really a beatiful sight to see and i think everyone should be able to see something that beatiful.

ORGANIC FOOD?$$
Why buy organic food?
Some people buy organic food because they think it’s healthier. They know that the organic animals haven’t been given hormones or antibiotics. The organic plants have not been sprayed with pesticides or fungicides. They can also be sure that the ground has no traces of man-made chemicals.
Some people think organic food tastes better. This is not confirmed as fact but many people still believe it. There very little—conventionally grown sugars or other foods are added to organic foods, and organic foods are not processed. Organic foods are kept pretty much as they were when they were grown.

Habitat
House finches frequent city parks ,backyards, urban centers, farms and forest edges across the continent in the western U.S. you will also find house finches in there native habitats of deserts, glassland, chaparral and open woods.
HOW TO DO BIRD CALLS
Beginning Steps
•Take two small rectangular blocks of wood and cut a wide, shallow notch on one side of both of them. Lay the two blocks on top of each other with the notches facing inward, so as to leave a gap in the middle---it ought to look like a long, narrow hole passing horizontally between the two blocks. You should be able to completely cover the hole on one side with your mouth.
Finishing Construction
•Cut a wide rubber band so that it forms a long strip, and stretch it across the hollowed side of one of the blocks. Lay the other block on top the same way as before, so that the two blocks hold the rubber tightly between them. Secure the two blocks together with another, smaller rubber band.
Alternate Materials
•If you happen to be on a camping trip or long hike, you can still make your own bird call, using natural materials. The thick stalks of some plants can be substituted for the wooden blocks---cut a length of stalk four or five inches long, split it lengthwise, and hollow out the middle part. Any sort of wood will do, though, and it should be easy to find bits of wood on a hike. The wide rubber band can be substituted with a blade of grass, and the smaller fastening rubber band can be replaced with string or twine.
Usage
•To play the bird call, hold it up to your mouth and blow into the gap on one side. This will make the rubber band or blade of grass vibrate, making a shrill singing sound. By blowing harder and softer, in different patterns of notes, you can imitate nearly any bird's call---all it takes is a little practice

HOW TO CREATE A BIRD HOUSE
How to Build a Bird House
Assembly Instructions:
1. Before proceeding with each joint, start the nails, tapping into position, then apply waterproof glue along the joint edge.
2. Butt and glue the two bottom sides together as shown in Fig.1
3. Next, glue and nail the back section to the bottom sides.
4. Glue and nail the inside supports; see Fig. 1 for positioning on the back.
5. Using the 1 3/8 hole saw, drill a hole in the front section so that the top of the hole is 2" down from a corner; see finished photo for detail. Use a 1/4" bit to drill a hole for the dowel perch, 5'8" below the bottom of the larger entrance hole. Sand the edges smooth, and sand all other inner parts of the bird house before nailing down the front.
6. Glue and nail the front to the bottom sides and the inside supports.
7. Position roof sections so that they meet, but do not butt at the top. Glue and nail the roof sections into place. The roof overhangs the sides, as shown.
8. Glue the 5" dowel in the channel between the roof sections to complete this joint.
9. Sand all surfaces.
10. Lastly, glue the 3" dowel into position as a perch.
Your bird house is now ready to stain or paint as desired.
Note: The size of hole that you make in your bird house and its height above ground will determine, in part, what kind of bird your bird house attracts. For help in choosing these important dimensions, see our article on Building the Right Bird House.

what attrack's birds
BIRDS ARE VERY BEAUTIFU CREATURES AND I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE WONDER ON HOW DO YOU ATTRACKT THESE BIRDS WELL I "AHMADASIA" IS HERE TO TELL YOU GUYS ALL AROUND THE COUNTRY HOW TO ATTRACK BIRDS.Providing food, nest boxes, nesting materials, water, and natural habitat can attract birds to our backyards, giving us much nicer views of them and, when done properly, making life easier for the birds. Attracting birds is also a great way to introduce young people to nature, and it's something the whole family can share. Having a bird-friendly yard has never been more important – nearly 80 percent of wildlife habitat in the United States is in private hands, and an average of 2.1 million acres each year are converted to residential use.
KNOW IF YOUR LOOKING TO ATTRACKT BIRDS IN THE WINTER ITS A LITTLE DIFFRENT SO IM GOING TO GIVE YOU A FEW POINTER'S.Sometimes the birds suffer more for lack of water than food. And they need it all year around, including in the winter. There are wonderful bird baths available for providing unfrozen water in winter, as well as in summer.
And when that first storm hits, they'll show up. Hungry. Chirpy and chattery. Red and blue and black-and-white and yellow. Fun to look at on a cold winter day.

Hummingbirds
Attraction
Hummingbirds are attracted by such plants as the global thistle, the cardinal flower, and coral bells.+
Hummingbirds can eat up to their body weight each day when they are fattening up for the fall migration.
Hummingbirds dont eat seeds at all, they mostly eat nectar but not only nectar. They may visit 1,000 flowers per day in their search of nectar. They also eat small insects such as gnats, midges, flying ants and small beetles.
Kevin's rap
Here's a rap I wrote for my SCA group:

How to attract butterflies and birds
What Attracts Them:
Butterflies are guided by the invisible world of scents and smells. Certain kinds of flowers give off a fragrance that butterflies find attractive, a signal that the plant may be a source of sweet nectar for the insects to feed on.
Birds are guided by visual means, and are especially attracted to certain shades of red. Many red-colored flowers just happen to be good sources of nectar, a clever signal from Mother Nature.

How to Plant Sunflowers.
Step 1. choose a place that recieves at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.
Step 2. Perpare soil by digging to a depth of 8-12 in. Mix in organic materials (leaves, grass clippings, etc.)
and remove all rocks before you plant.
Step 3. Spacing and depth depends on variety of seedlings. Follow package directions. generally, you will plant seedlings to a depth about a 1/2 in. Cover with soil, tamp them down by hand and water thoroughly.
Step 4. Keep the soil evenly moist until the seedlings have germinated (begins to grow) and they have emerged.
Step 5. Water if they lack in growth. Sunflowers usually dont require alot of watering and generally can do good in any condition.
Step 6. Weed as necessary to keep the bed looking its best.

Lombard Lot Work
The Lombard lot is really coming along. We were suprised that the weeds grew up so quickly. They are already waist high! Last Tuesday we helped fill raised beds with soil and started clearing a path that will take visitors on a tour of the garden. Soon we will learn how to make natural beauty products using things like mint, which is growing very well in the garden. It is great to be contributing to City High's garden project!

How To Make Lip Balm..
We are making Lip Balm. Here are some ingredients and directions of How to make it the Best Tasting Lip Balm.
Ingredients:
2 Teaspoons Grated Beeswax or Beeswax Pellets
3 - 6 Drops Flavored Oil
1 Teaspoon Sweet Almond Oil or Jojoba Oil or mix 1/2 and 1/2
1 1/2 Teaspoon Cocoa Butter
1 Vitamin E Capsule (as a preservative)
Directions:
Melt all carrier oils, beeswax and butters over low heat. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then add the flavored oils, essential oils, vitamin E, etc. Stir until all ingredients are blended well and pour into containers. The easiest way to do this, is to purchase those inexpensive "pointy" paper drink cups (like the kind on the side of a water cooler). Cut off the point and use it as a funnel. Then you can just toss them out when you're finished!
You may have to "play around" with these recipes by adding a tiny bit more or less of the beeswax pellets. As with any of these recipes, if it comes out too soft, add a few more beeswax pellets; if it's too hard, add a little more almond oil (or other oil). They're really hard to mess up, so enjoy yourself and have fun.
